meet the Locals of Harbour Island: How Brilanders see themselves

schoolgirls of Harbour Island BahamasFor all the geographic and sensual charms of Harbour Island, many visitors will tell you it's the open-hearted genuineness of the people they come for. Whether it's the older folk expressing the pride and standards of an era slipping away or the younger folk carving out a living, Harbour Island just seems to have more than its fair share of interesting characters.

To help you feel a bit like you belong before you even arrive, here's a brief introduction to a few of the folks and what they care about. We plan to add new pieces here regularly.

Charles Carey runs art gallery from his Auntie's house. (01/02)
Early adapter Iris Lewis: Using a computer to make better handicrafts (12/01)
Master carpenter Joe Saunders on maintaining the historic houses (6/01)
Renowned percussionist Peanuts Tailor says
"Wherever there's a Bahamian there's a drum"(05/01)

Retired teacher Prince Mather talks about Harbour Island history (03/01)
Veteran Cook Flo Percentie's recipe for peas n' rice (03/01)
Entrepreneur Wade Higgs on making a living. (02/01)
"Mamma Sarah" Hutchison on the U.S. election recount (interviewed 12/00)

And coming one of these days:

Anthony Mather: farmer in the garden of paradise
Scott Lewis: A young carpenter steps out on his own (from our Young Entrepreneurs series)
Miss Elodie Ling: Retired teacher, force majeur
