  Happenings in Harbour Island Bahamas

February 2001:
Replacement planted for Beloved Fig Tree

new fig tree for Harbour Island BahamasA group of volunteers bought and planted a 30-foot replacement for the beloved fig tree at the foot of Government dock in January. Mark Saunders and other plumbers set up a new water tap and a timer to water the newcomer until it gets established. A small ceremony was held.

The old stump had stood collecting memorials of conch shells and flowers for a year since its demise in hurricane Floyd. Its stump of dearly departed fig tree at Harbour Island Bahamas arching branches had shaded innumerable public events, and its massive trunk hosted the bulletin board that was the town's main center of communication.

We look forward to many years of faithful service by its replacement.
